Refining margins spike as diesel supply crunch collides with Hormuz risk
Diesel just had its best two-week run since last summer, and that's before you factor in the Strait of Hormuz standoff still rattling crude. Refiners are printing money β Valero's Q2 refining profit alone jumped 247% β while retail pumps haven't caught up yet.
Crude and product futures closed the week higher on Hormuz tensions and tightening diesel supplies, with Nymex ULSD up nearly 5% and RBOB up over 5% week-on-week. Refining margins are ballooning β diesel crack near $97/bbl β as global refining disruptions, including Ukrainian drone strikes on Russian refineries, squeeze usable fuel supply even as crude flows continue. On the policy side, EPA is set to extend the RFS compliance deadline for refiners, and clean-fuels momentum continues with new SAF and renewable diesel offtake deals.
